Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we were recently able to gift 48 patients with a rooster and a hen, a total of 96 chickens. These are not standard Ethiopian chickens: skinny, tough, and athletic from running freely and darting across roads. They were purchased from an agricultural development and have been inoculated to be resistant to local diseases.
The chickens provide two blessings: The recipients will be able to raise chickens and eggs to sell at the market and the eggs will supplement their modest diets with good quality protein.
You may wonder at the expressions on our patients’ faces. They don’t look too happy. This is a cultural matter. They believe that they are supposed to look serious when their pictures are taken. They are really happy and grateful for the wonderful gift of chickens.
